Chapter Sixteen

Diana

Orion had been gone for more than a few hours now. Far longer than he had originally estimated his meeting to last. I paced in front of the couch anxiously, looking back to the door at every sound I thought I heard.

“What is keeping him?” I asked myself out loud.

My fears swirled in my mind. I pictured a trap waiting for him at the packhouse and Chios killing him for his treachery.

“No,” I reasoned with myself. “I would have felt something. The bond would have told me if he had been killed.”

But what if he is being held prisoner?

I shook the thought from my mind, bringing my thumb to my mouth and chewing on the nail. He had said it would be a couple of hours. Maybe there was just more to discuss than he had realized.

Maybe he and Maria are hitting it off better than you thought they would. My traitorous wolf side whispered.

I stopped pacing, my blood burning hot at the thought. I could feel my powers sparking along my skin down to my fingertips. The sound of thunder rolling in the sky beyond my newly repaired window.

Do I really have a right to be angry about that? I thought, feeling my eyes burn.

After all, I’m the one choosing to keep the true nature of our relationship from him. Why shouldn’t he get to know his future mate?

At that thought, the door swung open, and Orion came through. His eyes were darkened, his shoulders stiff. The hairs on the back of my neck and arms stood straighter now, reacting to the obvious nature of his mood.

He was angry. Very angry. I hadn’t seen him this angry since Thomas had cornered me. I couldn’t imagine what must have happened at the packhouse for his anger to be so palpable. I could almost taste it in the air.

“Orion,” I called out as he passed me without a word.

I could see his shoulder’s stiffen, standing just at the entrance of the bathroom.

“What happened?” I asked.

He didn’t answer me, didn’t even speak. Not immediately that is. He just stood there. His hands pressed to either side of the bathroom door as he leaned forward.

I watched the cords of his muscles tightening beneath his shirt. The air between us was growing thicker with his rage as I waited for him to answer me.

Whatever had happened, it clearly wasn’t good. Then again, I don’t believe anything involving Maria could have a good outcome, but in this case, bad for him would be far worse than I could imagine. He didn’t have the same history with Maria that I did. They weren’t even members of the pack when his parents were alive, so he would have no idea as to her nature. He would be just as blind to it as I had been before my powers emerged.

“What did Maria say?” I asked, stepping closer to him.

He swung his head to me, narrowing his gaze as he looked at me. The look itself hurt. But his words stung worse than a slap to the face.
